Marrakesh 2025

At the end of February 2025, I had the chance to visit Marrakesh. Due to political reasons, it’s usually quite difficult for Taiwanese citizens to obtain a visa for Morocco. But thanks to a friend and some help from a travel agency, I was able to make it happen in just two months.

My first few days in Marrakesh felt overwhelming. It’s an incredibly photogenic place. The harsh sunlight creates strong contrasts, and the buildings are mostly painted in warm colors like orange and red, which makes the environment feel even more vibrant and exotic. However, while walking through the streets, I found it surprisingly difficult to take photos. Many people don’t like being photographed and often make that very clear.

Although people aren’t usually the main subjects of my photography, it wasn’t always easy to avoid them in the crowded market areas. Countless times, someone came up to me and asked me not to take their photo, even when I was actually photographing a building or a tree, and they just happened to pass by.

From this short trip, I didn’t have a particular subject or clear direction for my photos, so I found it difficult to put together a cohesive story or series. Still, I managed to make one selection of images. Some of them are more straightforward street photography, where I tried to capture the moments of everyday life in Marrakesh that I found interesting. And others I try to focuses on more mundane, yet still fascinating scenes, highlighting the unique textures and atmosphere of the city that people often overlook.
